With such a busy career in the city, Ms. de Boer had imagined a solo restaurant in the Hudson Valley more as a project for retirement. I used to do that, but I have trained my mind with a lot of work to think about the abstract first, and that is what my first design board will reflect. Every project I work on begins with finding the inspiration behind my design. Doing this not only challenges my mind, but it also forces me to be creative and that is where most of us get stuck.

Advantages of a Physical Mood Board

For me personally, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s difficult for me to communicate my vision for a space with description words alone. To find paint colors for your design board, you have a few options. If you know the paint colors you are considering because you already have swatches or have tested paint in your space, simply do a quick Google search for the paint color’s name. Ideally, try to save an image of the actual paint color (not a picture of the color already in a room) that is from the paint manufacturer’s website (e.g., Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, etc). Today I want to share with you one of the bases of good interior design so that you can make your own process significantly better and improve your ability to create beautiful interiors. To do this, I will be exploring the process of making design boards.

You can also add notes and other elements such as ribbons and buttons if you want to give your mood board for interior design some extra visual interest. The furniture board is so much fun, in my opinion, because I love furniture. I think it's one of those items that complete a space and bring it alive. Also, it adds the functionality aspect to it, which is so important in interior design. One of the most difficult challenges for an architect or an interior designer is to be process-oriented.

You can use mood boards to get very clear about where you are headed with your room design before spending a lot of time and money. Sometimes you’ll be able to easily find images of these keepers online but oftentimes, they’re older or can’t be found exactly. Instead of spending time searching up the exact flooring you have, just take a photo of your floor and add that to your design first. I have done that in almost all of my design boards where I’m reusing furniture or flooring. They will help you get from your before to the after you’re dreaming of without too many mis-steps. While I think this is helpful for anyone completing a creative project, it’s particularly helpful to keep you on track during the design process if you’re a visual person.

That's why one of my top interior design tips is to take the time to create a design board for each space you work on in your home. With the scant number of days that rain or cold is an issue in the Las Cruces area, the patio is almost always well used. I happened to go on a day that passes for cold here, and the fire pot in the middle of the patio made it quite comfortable.
